Whether you are staining a new deck or giving an old deck a makeover, it is important to make sure you complete the staining process correctly so your deck will look its best. Follow these instructions to stain your deck like a pro:

  1. Walk around the deck and make note of anything that needs repairing. This may include broken screws and broken or warped pieces of wood.
  2. Thoroughly clean the deck to allow the stain to properly adhere. Use a deck cleaner and scrub the deck with a hard-bristled mop. Next, use a pressure washer to remove residue. Make sure to allow the deck to dry completely before staining.
  3. Using a roller brush or sprayer, apply an even coat of the stain. Make sure there are no nails sticking up above the wood, as nails will damage the brush and give the stain a rough texture.
  4. Allow the stain to dry completely. Most stains take 24 to 48 hours to dry. Be sure to read the instructions on the stain you have chosen.
